Is Spring an Allergic Nightmare? part one

The time of blossoming has begun!

Hayfever sufferers are probably familiar with how an increase in environmental allergens manifests and therefore keep some anti-histamines handy to manage the effect. Consider the following to deter from what you normally consider an inevitable outcome at this time of year:

1. Know your allergens

Many of us know that something "sets us off" but don’t necessarily know what. If you don't know, try to find out. There may be more things in your bouquet of allergies than expected. Consider food allergies and intolerance testing as well.

There are invasive and non-invasive options available. Below are some providers, but google will help you find something in your area. Also chat to your GP to see what options they might provide.

2. Eliminate and Avoid

Once you know what to avoid, do your best to avoid it. It’s not always possible with environmental allergens because they are everywhere!

If you find out you have food intolerances, do your best to stay away from these too because exposure to some allergens will exacerbate your intolerance to others.

3. Stay Hydrated

Histamine levels are likely to be higher when dehydrated. Keep up the fluids particularly since the weather is heating up and you’re sweating more.

4. Vitamin C & Bioflavonoids

Vitamin C and bioflavonoids are natural antihistamines. Food sources are a great way to naturally incorporate it, but during acute allergic stages consider supplementation which will help to relieve symptoms faster.

5. Herbs!

There are herbs to reduce the allergic response, minimise inflammation pathways and soothe irritated mucus membranes. A Naturopath can source you good quality supplements or a herbal tincture to manage your symptoms or prevent them occurring.
